Unseen Protection – Numbers 23:19-21

“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Behold, I received a command to bless: he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it…The LORD their God is with them, and the shout of a king is among them.” Numbers 23:19-21

In this passage, a ruler felt threatened by the presence of the Israelites and asked a pagan seer to curse them. God met with the seer, Balaam, and gave him words to speak, but they were words of blessing to Israel. Here we are given a glimpse of God’s faithful protection over His people, unbeknownst to them. At the time, they had no idea this was happening. But God knew, and He was faithful to fulfill His promises.

He made it clear to the enemy that He was with Israel. He also declared that no lies or deceit would come from Him, and that He doesn’t change His mind. He’s letting him know that nothing he does will cause the Lord to turn His back on His people—no bribes, no sacrifices, no riches or displays of power. God is self-sustaining and infinitely glorious and is in need of nothing from this mortal king. The God of Israel is faithful and true, and no one is powerful or influential enough to revoke His blessings or thwart His purposes.

How encouraging this can be to those of us who know God. He will stand in our defense, He will be our shield, even when we don’t see the threats and dangers around us. He is with us, has chosen to be our Savior, and He will never change His mind. Psalm 71:15 says, “My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.” The number of our Lord’s deeds of salvation on our behalf are beyond our knowledge. We have no idea how many times He steps in to defend us. As our shield, He takes the hits intended to destroy us. He will never fail as our protector. Anything that filters through to impact us is a part of His plan that is full of His steadfast love and faithfulness toward us.

Let us rejoice today, knowing that the God of Heaven is on our side, fighting for us, protecting us from dangers we cannot see.
