“For the LORD of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low; against all the cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up; and against all the oaks of Bashan; against all the lofty mountains, and against all the uplifted hills; against every high tower, and against every fortified wall” Isaiah 2:12-15
This morning, this passage brings both hope and challenge to my heart. Seeing all that God will bring low—cedars of Lebanon, oaks, mountains, hills, high towers, fortified walls—highlights that nothing surpasses His strength. He can and will break through anything. Nothing can stand against Him.
This challenges me to remember who my God is. To remain aware of the state of my heart. To guard against pride. To always seek His face and align myself with His Word, with truth and light and righteousness. Because God will humble those who walk in pride. He will not allow us to continue exalting ourselves. There will come a day, no matter how secure our heights seem, no matter how much we have built up for ourselves, when God breaks down every high place. Everything that doesn’t shine with His glory. “The LORD alone will be exalted in that day” (Isaiah 2:17). And this isn’t because He is prideful—it is because He reigns in the splendor of majesty, and no one deserves His praise.
This also renews hope within me that nothing and no one is beyond His reach. Whoever He wants to draw to Himself, my God can break through whatever walls they’ve built up and through any barriers set in place. He can reach them. He can reach me, even if I fall far away. He can tear down hindrances to His purposes. Anything that rises in opposition to what God wants to accomplish in and through my life, and in the world at large. “I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by name” (Isaiah 45:2-3). “He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart…For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron” (Psalm 107:14,16).
Lord, Your power is greater than we can imagine. Impress this truth on our hearts so that we know that You reign and that nothing is beyond Your reach. May our souls tremble as we consider Your worth and Your might, that we would never attempt to exalt ourselves above Your glorious name. You are holy, and none can possible compare. Anyone and anything we try to put in Your place just leaves us feeling empty and unsatisfied. Only You can fill us. Only You can bring us joy and peace. You make our cup overflow. It’s amazing that You love us this much. That You humbled Yourself, the Most High, and came to earth so that we could know You. You meet us where we are. And nothing can hinder You from breaking through our darkness. Shine the light of Your glory into our lives. Transform us to reflect Your light. Assure us that nothing is too difficult for You, that You will go before us and level any exalted place, any doors of bronze and bars of iron that stand in our way. Be exalted in our hearts. May we always know that You reign over everything, and may this truth fill us with joy.
