“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters” Isaiah 55:1a
Everyone who thirsts is beckoned to the source of Living Water. Beckoned by the Living Water Himself. Jesus, who restores our soul and refreshes our spirit. Jesus, who strengthens us and fills us with light and life. Jesus, our Hope. Our Peace. Our Joy.
It just amazes me how God so plainly invites us to be satisfied and filled with joy. He doesn’t hide Himself. And yet so often we run after other things, hoping that our thirst will be quenched elsewhere. Wondering why we are always left unfilled. Wishing we could find something that would last longer than a mere moment. “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food” (Isaiah 55:2). God recognizes this tendency in us to run after things that will not satisfy. He entreats us to listen to Him diligently, to eat what is truly good and delight ourselves in rich food. To delight ourselves in Christ. Because He is the richest of foods for our soul. His Word soaks in, refreshing us as our eyes are opened to the truth and beauty of the Living God.
“Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David…Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:3, 6-7). This is the call of God. This is Him beckoning to your heart, drawing you to joy. That your soul may live. That you may know the wonder of His everlasting covenant, His faithfulness that never leaves you and His love that never wavers. There is no time to waste here. So let us seek the Lord while He may be found and call upon Him while He is near. Let us forsake anything in us that creates a barrier between us and our Joy. Anything and everything that leaves us feeling parched and worn. Living Water is here for us, for everyone who thirsts. Let us return to the Lord and experience His great compassion. In Christ, we have nothing to fear. His sacrifice covers our sin and shame, so that all we know is mercy, grace, and abundant life.
Drink deeply of His river of delights, and find the fullness of abiding joy in our Savior, who is Faithful and True.
“Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water’…Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again. The water that I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” John 4:10, 13
