Strong in Power – Deuteronomy 1:30-33

“The LORD your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place. Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the LORD your God, who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.” Deuteronomy 1:30-33

Why do we so quickly abandon faith and begin to doubt the faithfulness or the power of our God? He goes before us. He fights for us. He carries us as our Father. He seeks out a place for us to rest, those green pastures and still waters that refresh our soul. But in the face of circumstances that seem impossible, when the obstacles are big and scary and far too great for us to handle, we become anxious and fearful.

In those moments of distress, I pray that God will remind us of what He’s already done, how He has shown Himself strong for and faithful to us. Whether that reminder is a word from a friend, a passage in Scripture that stirs our heart to trust again, or any other medium He chooses to use. Because He can use anything. I also pray that when those reminders come, we will listen. That I will listen. That I won’t just stubbornly cling to my doubt or believe the lie that while my God came through before, He won’t do it this time. That He is unable or unwilling. That He will forget or abandon me. That I will slip through the cracks, unnoticed before this majestic God who reigns over the universe.

May our shield of faith rise when those lies and doubts enter our mind. Recall the many times in Scripture that God affirms His steadfast love for you, His faithfulness that is great, and His mercies that are new every morning. He has promised to never leave you or forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:8). He has declared that you will never be forgotten, that your name is engraved on His hands (Isaiah 49:15-16). The hands of your Savior. The One who gave His life for you. The One who fills you with His Spirit so that your soul is made alive. The One who lives to make intercession for you. You have a perfect help at the throne of Grace. There is a Living God who will carry you through the wilderness and will not let you fall. He goes before you and He is your rear guard (Isaiah 52:12), surrounding you as the mountains surround Jerusalem and guiding you in perfect love and wisdom.

“Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing” (Isaiah 40:26). Not one star in the sky is missing, because our God is strong in power. This same God calls you by name and has declared that because He is greater than all, no one will snatch you out of His hand (Isaiah 43:1, John 10:29). He will uphold you by His might and sustain you by His grace. May your heart be encouraged today by this absolute, unchanging truth.
