“It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery…Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations…He will love you, bless you, and multiply you…You shall be blessed above all peoples…You shall not be in dread of them, for the LORD your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God.” Deuteronomy 7:7-9, 13-14, 21
I think I can forget at times who my God is. How amazingly faithful He is. How wondrously He desires to bless us. How vast His steadfast love is toward us. How all-powerful and entirely capable He is in bringing about all of His purposes in our lives. How in control He is. And how much I don’t need to worry as a result of all of this.
Because He is faithful. He is good. He pours out grace, compassion, and strength for each moment. He is a great and awesome God who does great things beyond our imagination. He leads us with a mighty hand, preparing the way for us and preparing us for all that He has in store. He has stored up abundant goodness for us. It will look different in each of our lives, but that’s clearer evidence of how beautifully personal our God is in His love for us.
I’ve said before, He isn’t a cookie-cutter God and He doesn’t give us cookie-cutter lives. In His perfect, steadfast love, He wrote each of our days and is pouring out blessings specifically designed for us. He formed us in the womb and is renewing us each day to make us into the person He created us to be—that person who will perfectly fit in the role He has carved out for us. And in His faithfulness, God does not leave us to fulfill that role and accomplish His purposes alone. He is with us each moment. In our midst, in power and glory and grace. Continually working on us, leading us, and filling us with Himself. He is the vine, pouring abundant life, joy, peace, wisdom, and strength into this branch.
“Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!”
“But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.”
“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
