“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the window of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need…Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.” Malachi 3:10, 12
God doesn’t want us to hold back. He wants us to be all in, for our commitment to Him and our trust in Him to be absolute. Because He knows that it’s worth it and that He is absolutely trustworthy. The concept of tithing isn’t supposed to be a legalistic ritual that places us in the judgment or praise of other people. It is simply a reminder to us that we are relying on our God to provide. It is a way for us to show Him that we are not clinging to riches or material wealth for satisfaction or safety, but instead we are looking to Him and treasuring Him above all things.
“The full tithe” that God is calling us to bring isn’t something someone else can dictate for you. Only you and God know what He is asking you to lay before Him. It won’t always be money. There are all kinds of things we can begin to value above our Lord, relationships or careers or ideas to which we look to define us and give us a semblance of security in this life. God wants to deliver us from the burden of trying to maintain a hold on that which will let us down. He doesn’t want us to base our life and happiness on something we could lose. He wants us to base our life and happiness on the one thing we can never lose—Christ, and the freedom and salvation and fullness of joy He offers us.
As we choose to bring our full tithe, as we choose to no longer hold back out of fear or stubbornness or pride, we open our heart to see the wondrous things God can do in a life that is wholly His. We put Him to the test to see if He truly does satisfy, if He does “put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound” (Psalm 4:7), if His grace really is all-sufficient and His provision perfectly timed. We allow our Lord to show Himself strong for us, to demonstrate His faithfulness, and to show us what it means for Him to be our portion. And how amazing that is. Others will see that we are immeasurably blessed, not because we fought for everything the world values, but because we held it all loosely except Christ and were willing to give it up and see how God would come through for us. We will be a land of delight, our cup filled to overflowing, because we will be free. Free to enjoy the blessings our God pours down when He opens the window of heaven for us. Trust Him here. “To the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. Yet the LORD set his heart in love on your fathers and chose…you above all peoples” (Deuteronomy 10:14-15). He will never fail you.
