Never-Ending Grace – Psalm 77:52-53

“Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.” Psalm 77:52-53

Our God leads us in safety, our Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep, so that we never need to be afraid. Reflecting on this, I’m struck by the contrast seen in verse 53.

We are not afraid because our God leads us in safety. But the enemies of God—those who seek to destroy His people—are left in terror as He comes upon them in power and wrath. We have such a great God on our side. It can be difficult for me at times to maintain that perspective, to remember all that He is. To recall His grace, compassion, and faithfulness to me, as well as His great might against which nothing can stand. But it is in dwelling on all that He is that our faith truly strengthens. We are left in awe as we remember that this God who is sovereign, all-knowing, and all-powerful, this God who entirely overwhelms His enemies, looked down on us when we were enemies and showed us immeasurable grace by giving His life to reconcile us to Himself (Romans 5:6-11).

And grace doesn’t end there. It doesn’t stop with forgiving our rebelliousness and sin. It doesn’t stop with redeeming that sin to bring Him glory. It doesn’t even stop with His breathing new life into our souls so that we can live in the light of His glorious grace forever. No, His grace continues. It is active in your life today. As He fills you with Himself. As He leads you in safety so that you don’t need to fear. As He pours out His perfect, steadfast love and opens your eyes to see His faithfulness surrounding you. As He gives you strength for the day, for the hour, for each moment you face. The God of all heaven and earth is for you. He is on your side, in infinite grace and power and glory.
