“You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
Trust in the LORD forever,
for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.”
I’ve been struggling this morning with letting go. It’s so tempting to analyze and try to figure out how to “fix” a situation…rather than simply letting go and trusting God when there really is nothing you can do. I prayed that God would help me here, and as I was reading Scripture, I came across Ephesians 4:23, “to be renewed in the spirit of your minds.” God gently began working in me, reminding me that as His child, I am being renewed in the spirit of my mind. Which can have a lot of applications, but the focus this morning is that He is teaching me to trust Him. On my own, I want to be in control and see how everything is going to work out. But with His strength and assurance, with the faith that He gives and perfects in me, He enables me to trust Him even when I don’t understand.
Romans 8:6 tells us that “to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Life and peace, if we will only choose to set our mind on the Spirit of God. If we will consciously focus our thoughts on His promises and the truth of His character. I heard this quote by John Piper the other day: “God has designed the glory of the human being such that the condition of our heart…is profoundly influenced by the content of our head, or by what we focus consciously on.”
So regardless of how our heart currently feels, what we are struggling with and how hopeless it feels to try and change it, if we will set our mind on the Spirit and choose to focus on the Word of God, who He is and who we are in Him, He can do the work in our heart that seems impossible for us. We will know peace. We will know abundant life. It isn’t found in figuring out your circumstances and tying everything up neatly in a bow. It isn’t found in coming to some sort of understanding as to how you got to where you are. It is found in choosing to trust in God. Believe Him. Realize that He is sovereign, that everything is in His control. Your life, your circumstances, your relationships are held in and guided by His loving hand.
As we choose to stay our minds on God, He keeps us in perfect peace. Our Everlasting Rock is immovable and unchangeable, and He is entirely trustworthy. You can trust Him with your dreams. You can trust Him with your fears. You can trust Him with everything that is completely out of your control and all that leaves you lost in confusion. “For the righteous will never be moved…his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD” (Psalm 112:6-7).
We will not be moved. We will not be shaken. We will be able to look at our future with hope and joy, trusting that our God who is good and all-powerful knows the plans He has for us and He will see everything to completion. So we look to our Lord when our faith wavers, asking Him to help us, to remind us of who He is and what He has done. And we compel our heart to keep believing Him, fixing our eyes on truth.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” Psalm 103:2-5
