Reassurances – Genesis 15:1-6

“After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: ‘Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’ But Abram said, ‘O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’…And He brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.’ Then He said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’ And he believed the LORD, and He counted it to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:1-6

Days come when we seem to need extra reassurance of God’s promises…of His plan, His wisdom, His understanding of our heart, His goodness, His grace which sustains us. Reassurances of so many aspects of who He is. And one wonderful reality of our God is that He will provide the assurance we need. He knows exactly what it is.

We can come before His throne of grace, fall at His feet, and pour out our struggles, our doubts, our fears. He knows how to restore our faith. How to rebuild our hope. How to remind us that He is good and does good, and how to help us believe Him. Our part is to run to Him. Don’t hide what you’re feeling. He can take it. And even if you wrestle with Him for a time, He will be faithful to continue working on you. Restoration of faith, rebuilding of hope, can take time. But our gracious Lord is willing to invest in you. He is willing to spend time with you, patiently reminding you of truth and showing you more of who He is.

Because that’s what everything comes down to, isn’t it? We don’t need a step-by-step outline of His plans for us (as nice as that would be at times). We need to know that our God is great and worthy of being praised with everything that we are. We need to know that He is trustworthy, that He is faithful and true and will never let us down. We need to know that He knows those who are His and we are His forever, that He will never leave us, forsake us, or get fed up with our failure. We need to know that He sees us, He understands, and He cares enough to draw near to us in our brokenness and wipe away our tears. We need to know that He is aware of every detail of us and our circumstances, even the ones we can’t see, and He is lovingly taking care of all of it. He is our Defender, our Savior, our Friend. He is glorious in splendor and calls the stars out by name, and because He is strong in power not one of them is missing.

When we know who He is, we realize that we can trust Him. Even if our situation seems impossible. Even if our dreams seem completely out of reach or lost forever. We can trust Him here. We can hold fast to His promises and know that they will be fulfilled, and that even in the waiting His goodness and mercy are evident.

“And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.”
Psalm 9:10

“Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.” Isaiah 40:26

  1. Wednesday was a rough day for me, and I was feeling a lot of doubt. Not necessarily about God, but about my future and about things working out. This devotion is just the reminder I needed…God really does work in mysterious ways! Thank you 🙂
