My Heart Stands in Awe – Psalm 119:161

“Princes persecute me without cause,
but my heart stands in awe of your words.”

Psalm 119:161

Our heart should be so captivated by the words of God that even persecution fails to draw it away from Him. “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). As troubles come our way, as we face injustice and pain and difficulty, we must constantly turn our heart to recall the promises found in God’s Word. We must focus on truth and seek it as treasure. Our problems won’t disappear, but they will fade in the light of His glory. Their power to paralyze us and steal our joy will be broken as we hold to our faith and are filled with the strength of Almighty God.

This is a call to be intentional in the focus of our heart. Hearts are fickle. They get distracted easily and begin to doubt. But there is power in the Word of God, because He is the strength of our heart. The unfolding of His Word gives light. So in the face of affliction and persecution, when we are perplexed and struck down, let us look always to His Word. Because it holds all truth. Truth of who our God is and what He will do. Truth of our situation and the hope that is still here. Truth of who we are and how faithful Christ is to us.

Lord, I pray that our hearts would be captivated each day by the greatness of You. Because You are great and Your Word is power. The only way we will stand firm in the face of trial, the only way our lives will look as those described in 2 Corinthians 4, is by treasuring Your Word in our heart. So I pray that we would fall in love with You. I pray that our delight would be found in You, that You would be the foundation of our joy and our hope. May our heart stand in awe of Your Words. Holy Spirit, reveal to us the depth and beauty in Scripture. Make it come alive. Take our breath away with the glory of Your grace.
