On Our Side – Psalm 124:1-8

“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side…
then the flood would have swept us away,
the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone the raging waters…
Our help is in the name of the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.”

Psalm 124:1-8

“The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.”

Psalm 29:10

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. It is the Lord who is on your side. If it was anyone else, they might fail you. They might bail out in your most desperate moment. They might want to help you but simply be unable to do so. Because some things are just out of our hands.

But the One who is on your side is greater than all. He is more powerful than all. And there is nothing that He cannot do. Nothing is impossible. Nothing is out of reach. And nothing can come at you with a greater force than He can handle. So we are safe with Him. Our God is strong in power and holds the stars in place by the greatness of His might. It is this God who gave His life to save you.

This is why we have hope and comfort when we read Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” This is why there is strength and confidence in those words. Because the Lord who is on our side, the Lord who is with us in the flood and the storm, the raging waters and the fire, is enthroned over all of it.

“This I know, that God is for me” (Psalm 56:9b). What greater confidence could we have than this? Whatever happens, however strong the storm or uncertain the future, “This I know, that God is for me.” You may not be able to see anything else. You may feel lost and completely blind in the midst of your circumstances. But you only need to know this one thing: God is for you. Draw near to Him. Seek His face. He will show you who He is, He will assure you of His character and strength, and He will never fail to be your Refuge.
