“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.” 2 Thessalonians 2:8
What a powerful, victorious Savior is ours. This is our Lord described here, coming in glory, defeating His foes unquestionably with the breath of His mouth, bringing them to nothing by the appearance of His coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 says that the coming of this lawless one “is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders.” All the power that Satan has is no match for the glorious might of our God.
This should fill our heart with hope. As we look at our world, at all the evil and pain and difficulty, we know that there is coming a day when our Lord will defeat it all. “No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever” (Revelation 22:3-5). “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away’” (Revelation 21:1-4).
This is our future as those kept in Christ. Those who have chosen to take refuge in His name, trusting in His salvation and giving Him their lives to gain life abundant and eternal. “So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him” (Hebrews 9:28). So let us wait eagerly for our Savior, walking in joyful obedience and deepening love for and faith in our God. Our God who will one day defeat all evil so that He can wipe away every tear from our eyes and make all things new.
