“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”
2 Thessalonians 3:16
This verse has me dwelling on peace. What it is, where it comes from. Most particularly, why we are able have peace “at all times in every way.”
For those in Christ, the most basic truth of this is that we find peace in recognizing that our God is in control. The Lord of peace, the living God of hope, is able to give us peace “at all times in every way” because He knows what is happening, He knows the whole history, and He also knows the whole future. Our God knows precisely how He will work everything for our good and His glory. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). He knows His plans for you. Every detail.
We find peace in knowing that our God is with us. Each moment. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you” (Isaiah 43:2). We are never alone in what we face. Even if we feel abandoned by everyone else, our God is here. Even if no one else truly understands, He does.
Peace is found in trusting that our Lord is not only in control, and is not only with us, but He also loves us enough to actively be involved in our care. “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). “He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye” (Deuteronomy 32:10). Our God searched for us. He sought us out and found us. He encircles us. He cares for us. He intentionally keeps us as the apple of His eye. He doesn’t let us off on our own to figure things out or just take care of ourselves. And He doesn’t let His love for us be a wavering decision. No, He chooses to keep us in that cherished position. The apple of God’s eye. Loved and kept forever.
Today, may the Lord of peace Himself give each of us peace at all times in every way. Because He is in control. He is with us. He cares for us. Our God is good. He sees us, knows our details, and is involved in our lives on a very personal level. And there is no question that His every purpose, all the plans of His heart, will be fulfilled in flawless timing and execution.
