“I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water in the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt…And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” Joshua 2:9-11
Our God makes His name great among the nations. Word spreads as He acts for His children. This is true whether it is on a grand scale as with the Israelite nation or in the smaller view of the life of one of His sons or daughters.
The way He is working in your life, the way He has been and continues to be faithful to you in each circumstance—it is to make His name great. It is a testimony to your heart of the majesty, power, and steadfast love of the God who made the heavens, and it is a testimony to those around you of His reality and grace.
This is how we are witnesses. We are vessels through which the world sees the greatness of our God. We share what He has done, which at times requires vulnerability and transparent faith. It always requires humility as we highlight God’s amazing grace and our desperate need. As we remain faithful to Him, looking to our Lord in all things, waiting on Him and obeying Him, He will make His name great. He will work within and around us, and His fame will spread. He acts mightily in our lives so that He can dash all arguments against His truth and power. So we rejoice as we find ourselves in situations where our God must show up and do something, places where faith is required because everything is entirely out of our hands, so that His greatness will be evident even in the conversations of unbelievers.
The Most High God is displaying His greatness through how He works in your life. In a sermon on Psalm 23, David Platt makes a statement that has stuck with me for more than two years now: “Our God has bound up His glory and His honor and His reputation and His name in faithfully providing for you in the midst of difficulty.” Dwell on that amazing thought. Let it sink in to the depths of your heart. I pray that it will fill you with wonder at who our God is and with confident hope in His faithfulness, knowing that He will never let you down.
“Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
in the sight of the children of mankind!”
“For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name’s sake you lead and guide me”
