New Mercies – Jude 1:24-25

“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever.” Jude 1:24-25

What powerful truth is found in these words. The only God, our Savior, is able to do what we never could. He is able to keep you from stumbling. He is able to present you blameless before the presence of His glory.

I needed this reminder this morning. Coming before my Lord, I could feel the weight of failure. Haunted by wrong choices. Very aware of how much I don’t deserve to hear from Him. I began praying and pouring out my heart, admitting to God that I know I don’t deserve to have Him meet me here, to have Him speak through His Word and show me anything. He called to mind 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The faithfulness of our God is not dependent on our faithfulness to Him. He is faithful regardless. He shows mercy. He pours out grace. He forgives us and reaches down to pull us out of the mire. And it is He who cleanses us from unrighteousness. Not just some. He doesn’t do a quick fix to make us appear clean while leaving some areas in darkness. No, He cleanses us from all unrighteousness. This is His work. This is what His Spirit is doing in you, right in this moment, as He renews you day by day.

“Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction…Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble…He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction” (Psalm 107:17-20). The detail that has always stood out to me in these verses is that healing came by the Word of God. It is the truth and beauty of His perfect Word that transforms our heart. Because it isn’t just words. It isn’t just a collection of stories or platitudes to make us feel better. It is the sum of all truth. This Word is living and active, because His Spirit is filling the pages. As God unfolds His Word before us, as He opens our eyes to see wondrous things in His law and awakens our ears to hear Him, He stirs our hearts to know Him. We see His glory and come away changed.

Lord God, Maker of the heavens and the earth, Ruler of everything, thank You for Your faithfulness to us. We are so undeserving. We fail You so often. We are weak and poor. But it is in our weakness that Your power is made perfect. Because Your amazing grace is sufficient. And You are so much greater than all. Pull us out of the mire, Lord. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Teach us and empower us to walk in a manner worthy of You. In the moments when we feel our failure is too great, remind us of Your wonderful truth in Lamentations 3:22-23, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
