“You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest…
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given…
and his name shall be called…Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:3, 6
“You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and wine abound.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”
There is a sweet connection between these two passages. A statement made about where joy and peace are found. They are found in our God. Specifically, they are found in Jesus Christ, because it is only through Him that our relationship is restored and we are healed.
What an amazing God we serve, that He desires our joy and fills us with peace. He doesn’t just demand our obedience with the threat of annihilation if we cross Him. Instead, He shows us mercy. He pours out grace. He stores up blessings for those who take refuge in Him and works all things for good for those who are called according to His purpose. He dwells within us. He draws near to the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He came that we may have life abundant. And He personally wrote the plan of our salvation, providing the way for us to be forgiven for our sins and cleansed from all unrighteousness.
Our God makes us dwell in safety. Think about that. There is purpose here. Active involvement by the One who reigns over all things. You are safe in Him, because nothing happens to you outside of His purposes and favor. He surrounds you with favor as with a shield (Psalm 5:12). He keeps your going out and your coming in, both now and forevermore (Psalm 121:8). You lie down and sleep in peace, because you are His. And our wonderful, powerful Lord knows those who are His (2 Timothy 2:19). Your name is engraved on the palms of His hands—those hands that were pierced for your sake (Isaiah 49:16). You walk in the midst of His boundless love and faithfulness (Psalm 26:3). Each moment. Each day. Forever.
