Sorrows – Job 3:20-21

“Why is light given to him who is in misery,
and life to the bitter in soul,
who long for death, but it comes not,
and dig for it more than for hidden treasures”

Job 3:20-21

I don’t presume to know every reason why God allows such heartache to reach us…why one’s soul can experience such despair that they long for death or fear to live yet another day in the midst of such pain.

But I do know that, as in Joseph’s situation, what Satan intends for evil, my God purposes for good (Genesis 50:20). And it is God’s purposes that will win out.

I also know that regardless of what my eyes see or my heart feels, this God who reigns over all things is righteous and just. “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

The Word of God—His perfect Word which holds fast and remains true throughout all the ages—tells us that “all his work is done in faithfulness” (Psalm 33:4). So whatever we walk through, He is being faithful to us. He is faithful to uphold and sustain us within the difficulty, and He has been faithful even in the very act of allowing this hurt to reach us. Because this will bring us to greater heights of glory and deeper understanding of His steadfast love and grace.

Whatever the details of His purposes, one thing is certain: the sorrows we experience bring us closer to our God of all comfort. Because He draws near to the brokenhearted and personally binds up their wounds. His presence is felt most sweetly, His love known most purely, His promises clung to most fervently, when our other lights are gone.

Lord, may we live in Your light, holding to Your grace when everything around us is torn from our grasp. Hold us firmly in Yours. We don’t understand Your reasoning in all that we walk through, but I pray that in it all we will see You more clearly and be sustained by Your strength and unending love. You are faithful in all things. Be Light today. Be Hope. Be Peace. Be our everything, Lord. Above all, be with us.

“But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…
Because you are precious in my eyes,
and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you,
peoples in exchange for your life.’”
Isaiah 43:1-4
