“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God.
Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who have an anxious heart,
‘Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God,
He will come and save you.’
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert”
Such hope is seen here. An unquestioning declaration of what the Lord will do. We can be strong, we can fear not, we can “wait for the LORD…and let your heart take courage” (Psalm 27:14), because He will come and save us. Others will see the glory and majesty of our God in the story He is writing with our lives.
Our Lord is infinite and holy. He sees everything from the beginning to the end. Every detail, every outcome, every way that He will come through for us and cause waters to break forth in our wilderness and streams in our desert. He knows it all. So He can say with all authority and perfect wisdom, “There is hope for your future” (Jeremiah 31:17a). “Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. I will feast the soul of the priest with abundance, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 31:13-14).
When we are in midst of circumstances we don’t understand; when we can’t see how God will lead our lives, provide for our needs, or cause certain details to fall in place; when our heart is broken and we know that we can’t mend it ourselves; it can be difficult to believe in His power to break through the darkness. But He is Light itself. All things are held in His hand. He delights to be faithful to His children. So fear not. He is coming. He is setting the stage to make waters break forth in your wilderness. Those who wait for the Lord will never be put to shame. Because He will never let them down.
