Great Power – Luke 11:20

“But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” Luke 11:20

Reading Jesus’ statement here, my thoughts are immediately drawn to the great power of God. Demons—which easily overpower and terrify us—are cast out by the mere finger of our God. It isn’t remotely difficult for Him. He tells them to leave, and they are powerless to defy Him. He will be obeyed.

This is the power that is acting for those who wait for Him. The power that ensures that those who wait for Him will never be put to shame. It is this power within us that is making us like Christ—transforming and cleansing our heart from all unrighteousness, something we could never accomplish. This power assures us that our God is mighty to save and that He is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think.

“To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing” (Isaiah 40:25-26). Allow your mind to dwell on the fullness of His majesty and the greatness of His might. This One who created and sustains the stars and brings them each out by name. This One who is able to cast out demons with a flick of His finger because He truly is all-powerful. No other power is even worth comparing with His. And He is for you.

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” (Romans 8:31-34).

We walk in confidence and victory, knowing that this God who knows those who are His and who has engraved our name on His hands, justifies us. No charge can be brought against us. Christ Jesus Himself intercedes for us. So our accuser has no leg to stand on. “And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death’” (Revelation 12:10-11).

May the eyes of our hearts be enlightened, “that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come” (Ephesians 1:17-21). Immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe. Our Lord, who is far above all rule and authority and power and dominion. If God is for us, nothing and no one can be against us. Our accusers, our enemies, they will not win. Because the One who is for us is great in might and strong in power, and His faithfulness is everlasting.
