Overwhelming the Land – Job 12:13-15

“With God are wisdom and might;
he has counsel and understanding…
If he withholds the waters, they dry up;
if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.”

Job 12:13-15

I read these verses a few weeks ago, and what God whispered to my heart in that moment has stayed with me ever since. My focus was drawn to the words, “if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.”

Seeing that phrase immediately brought a picture to mind of a flood pouring into a city. But instead of water, my mind’s eye saw the blessings of God. Flooding the land. Entirely unstoppable. My heart was overwhelmed with the thought that when God decides to pour out blessings, nothing can stop them from reaching you.

Allow that truth to settle in your heart. Let it take root, sweeping through the doubts and fears that shadow it. Your Father in heaven sees you. With Him are wisdom and might, counsel and understanding. He is perfect love and everlasting faithfulness. He is entirely sovereign and commands all creation, down to the last detail, to accomplish His purposes. Purposes which are good and shining with the radiant glory of His grace.

If our God chooses to withhold something from us, even when it’s something we wanted, we can quiet our heart and cling to His promise that He will withhold no good thing from those who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11). He knows our heart, He knows what is good for us, He knows what will bring us joy, and we can trust Him here.

And if our God sends out His blessings to overtake us, there is nothing that can get in His way or prevent us from enjoying all that He has for us.

The key here is trust. And I believe trusting God comes through knowing Him. Knowing His character. Knowing His heart. Experiencing His love and His unexplainable peace. Storing up His Word in your heart—the commandments, the promises, the truth that it all contains. So that whether we see evident blessing overwhelming us or it appears that certain details are being withheld, we hold fast through it all to our Rock, our Sun, our Shield. We trust in His wisdom and His steadfast love.

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). If the God who reigns over all things loves us this much, and if He has determined to give us all things that are lovely and excellent and praiseworthy, what could possibly stand in His way? A few verses later in Romans 8:39, Paul writes that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Nor can anything keep His blessings from flooding your life.
