“But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.”
1 Corinthians 12:18
In unerring wisdom and abundant grace, God chose each of us to fill a certain role in the body of Christ. Whatever our gifts, however His grace is made manifest in us, His Spirit is working to fulfill His every purpose in and through us.
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love” (Ephesians 4:15-16). Our God has chosen us, filling us with Himself, so that together the body of Christ—those who believe in and choose to follow Him—will grow and build itself up in love “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).
Our roles will look different. The ways in which God calls us to build up His church will vary greatly. Because it is not about what we see or how we measure our contributions. It is about His understanding which sees all that we cannot, and His great wisdom which coordinates every detail in His magnificent plan. Our aim is to show love and to follow the calling of our God, wherever it may lead us. Even if we can’t see the purpose. Even if it looks like what we’re doing won’t matter. What matters is faith. What matters is love. What matters is obeying our Lord regardless of our viewpoint, trusting that He knows what He’s doing.
“God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.” Let this truth fill us with hope and confidence. God chose each of His own and arranged them with decided purpose. He will showcase His glory through His church. He will make Himself known to the nations. However He calls you, know that He is equipping you to walk in a manner worthy of that calling, that He will give you everything you need to accomplish it, and that He will be faithful to see you through to the very end. Our God is beckoning us to a life defined by His grace, power, and glory. Let us run with endurance and determine to follow Him always.
