“And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.
My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.”
When the Spirit of God comes to dwell with us, as we intentionally abide in Him, righteousness is the result. Our actions, our speech, the details of how we live our lives and make our choices reflect this righteousness of Christ. It is His character that is being produced in us. We face difficulties and various challenges to rid us of the impurities and corruption that draw us away from our Lord.
In a world where unrighteousness, sin, and selfishness are celebrated, we can lose sight of the benefits of righteous living. It causes us to stand out, and not always in a positive light. Others may not understand why we live the way we do. And it can be uncomfortable to not fit in. To be different. To make choices that seem strange or even ridiculous to some.
These verses give some insight to what righteousness brings. The benefits we find in our holy, faithful God are as immeasurable as His greatness. Because this righteousness produced in us brings us closer to Christ. It is evidence that we know Him and are continuing to walk with Him, drawing ever-nearer to our precious Lord and seeing more clearly the surpassing treasure that He is. Its effect is a peace that fills our soul beyond our understanding. Its result is quietness and trust, the serenity and security that our heart longs for and which we could spend our whole life trying in vain to find elsewhere.
This peace, this quietness and trust, are not momentary fixes to a situation. They are not quick or temporary. Rather, our Lord softly and powerfully instills them in our heart as we seek His face and choose to rest in Him each day. As He has promised to never leave or forsake us, so it is with His peace and the assurance of His salvation and power at work in our lives. Even to the end of all the ages, after this life is gone and this world has passed away, this truth will remain. We will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. Because we were made alive in Christ when we chose to trust in Him for our salvation. We held fast to the Word of our God, fixed our eyes on His glory, and experienced the wonder of His Spirit producing in us the character of our Lord. We will know fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore as we abide in the presence of God Most High for all eternity.
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’” Revelation 21:3-4
