Looking to Him – Isaiah 64:4

“From of old no one has heard
or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
who acts for those who wait for him.”

Isaiah 64:4

“The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
I will restore to you the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent among you.
You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the LORD your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.”

Joel 2:24-26

In waiting, there is a risk of allowing it to darken our view of God. To believe that since it seems like we have always been waiting, we will therefore always keep waiting for His goodness to shine through, because it never actually will. We will be left in this perpetual state. Just waiting.

But this life is filled with seasons and change. Our path is not designed to be the same throughout our years. I cannot look to my past or present and thereby determine what my future will look like.

I can only look to my God. And while that view may not give me a laid-out plan for my future, it will reveal the underlying truths that characterize each day lived with Christ.

My God is good. To me. He is faithful. To me. He fulfills every promise. He loves in steadfastness and perfection. He is Light, and in Him is no darkness at all. He acts for those who wait for Him, and they will not be put to shame.

There is a danger of viewing the waiting as a sign of inaction or apathy on the part of our God. Holding onto hurts and disappointments, raising our defenses, trying to shield our heart against Him…

What a sad state this would leave us in.

May it never be.

I am safe here. You are safe here, with Him. The God who did not withhold His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not, together with Him, graciously give us all things that are truly good and praiseworthy? He is not holding out on you. He has not forgotten you or cast you aside, even temporarily.

We need not defend our heart against Him. It is love that He is pouring in. Grace. Power. Light. Truth. What is needed is a release of those hurts and disappointments, entrusting them to our Lord for healing and redemption. Instead of raising defenses, we need to open our heart to Him, receiving His joy and allowing Him to purify and prepare us for all that He has in store.

Because what our God has in store is restoration, a brilliant outpouring of grace and power beyond anything we can imagine.

This waiting is not a sign of His inaction. It is a time of expectation, because He is getting all the details prepared. He is lining everything up in His perfect way, getting ready for the big reveal that will leave us speechless at this great God whom we serve.

Our God doesn’t have a limited amount of goodness to pour out on His children. His goodness towards you in your life is as limitless as His power, His grace, and His glory. How and when it will be displayed—even what it will look like in your story—is up to His sovereign wisdom and understanding. But the why remains in every circumstance: our God is good and He is faithful. Even in pain and difficulty, even when we can’t see Him, this stands true.

So today, in the waiting, let us look to our God. May He cause His truth to resound in our heart with His infinite glory and unending faithfulness.
