“Walk about Zion, go around her,
number her towers,
consider well her ramparts,
go through her citadels,
that you may tell the next generation
that this is God,
our God forever and ever.
He will guide us forever.”
Psalm 48:12-14
In verse 3 of this psalm is the statement, “God has made himself known as a fortress.” He makes Himself known to us as a fortress. As our strength. Our refuge. Our security. Our salvation. Our hope. To each of His children as we walk through our circumstances, He makes Himself known as the faithful One who will uphold, provide, and empower.
Our task is to not take this lightly. It is to not take His care and His revelation of who He is for granted. We are to know Him. To walk with our Lord daily. To study His Word and treasure up His truths, His promises, His commands and warnings, in our heart.
As we walk with Him, our eyes need to be open to His working in our lives and the many ways He comes through for us. We need to take note of His faithfulness. To recall it readily. To recognize the purpose and wisdom and greatness of our God so that it can be relayed to those coming behind us.
We all face different challenges. My life’s road will not look like yours. And yours will not look like anyone else’s. We likely will find ourselves in conversations in which we feel entirely inadequate to meet the other person’s need…they will be dealing with something we have never experienced, afflictions we have not known.
But there is One who understands. And He is the One who places those people in our path. We don’t need to know exactly what it is to walk through their situation…we simply need to know our Lord and recall His faithfulness to us. So that we can tell them that this is God. They may not know Him yet. They may not be able to see Him clearly in the midst of their storm. So let us be their eyes, confidently speaking truth in love, declaring the beauty and steadfastness of our God.
He is the living God, the One who lives forever and ever. He is the God who was, and is, and is to come. The God of hope, of salvation, the God of all comfort, the God who is mighty to save, and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He will guide. He will protect. He gives sight to the blind, life to the dead, strength to the weary, and healing to the broken. He is able to soften the hardest heart and give hope to those who have none. His love is perfect and unchanging, and nothing will ever separate you from that.
He will never leave you, never forsake you, and never stop pouring steadfast love and sustaining grace into your heart. There is nothing you could do that would cause Him to abandon you. And there is nothing that can keep Him from coming to your rescue. Our God will stand forever. We are able to rest in His grasp, because we know it will never fail. This is the truth we will see as we walk with Him. It is the truth we are called to convey.
“There is none like God, O Jeshurun,
who rides through the heavens to your help,
through the skies in his majesty.
The eternal God is your dwelling place,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Deuteronomy 33:26-27a
