“And they shall be called The Holy People,
The Redeemed of the LORD;
and you shall be called Sought Out,
A City Not Forsaken.”
In Christ, these are descriptions—names—of us. If you know Him, the King who came that we might be saved through Him, these are references to who you are in Him.
The latter part of the verse is what caught my attention this morning. “You shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.” We are sought out. By the God who created and owns all things. The infinite, holy God who has no need of us. He has sought you out, to draw you to Himself; to fill you with His joy, His life, His power; and to declare Himself your personal Savior, Shepherd, and Father.
“But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage. He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.” Deuteronomy 32:10
“For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so I will seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness…I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak” Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-16a
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” 1 John 3:1a
In Isaiah 62:4, it is written, “You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married, for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married.” We are A City Not Forsaken. Quite to the contrary—we are delighted in by the God who holds all things in His hands.
“But Zion said, ‘The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.’ ‘Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.’” (Isaiah 49:14-16a, emphasis added). You are not forsaken. You are not forgotten. Whatever your path looks like right now, however lonely or lost or overwhelmed you may feel, you have been engraved on the palms of the hands of your God. Not because you did something to make Him choose you, to make Him remember you, but because Holy, Almighty God sought you out, chose you, poured His love into your heart through His Holy Spirit, and committed Himself to being faithful to you forever—not because of who you are, but all because of who He is.
