Losing Sight of Love – Ephesians 3:17-19

“That you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints
what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,
that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Ephesians 3:17b-19

“God wants to meet you wherever you are and help you get to where you need to be. He will change you, but He will love you perfectly while He is doing so.” I read this statement in a devotional book this morning. Immediately my thoughts turned to various circumstances affecting those in my little circle of the world.

The love of God is essential to us. When daily frustrations arise, when we can’t see what God is doing, when hits keep coming from various angles, or when everything just falls apart—this is when we must determine to focus on the love of God for us. Pouring out our heart before Him, our Refuge, then quieting to sense His steady peace and hear assurances of His great love.

A love which chose us before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). A love which compelled Jesus, the Son of God, to walk every step to a Roman cross, enduring each moment of anguish and the pain of betrayal. A love which forgives and cleanses us without hesitation when we turn to Christ (1 John 1:9). A love which seals us as “His” forever (Ephesians 1:13-14). A love which heals us, frees us, and makes us whole (Psalm 147:3; Psalm 107:14; Ephesians 1:23). This love surrounds us as the mountains surround Jerusalem, “from this time forth and forevermore” (Psalm 125:2).

Walking through difficult moments, I sometimes recognize that God is working in my heart—strengthening my faith or perfecting my character—but lose sight of His love in the midst of apparent harsh surroundings. I need to remember that He is loving me perfectly within the fire. Just as He is loving perfectly those I care about as they go through valleys of shadow.

My God is not holding back love as He works on me or leads me through a hard season. No, He is here. Right here, with me. Covering me with His favor—the favor of the King of kings (Psalm 5:12). Surrounding me on all sides with powerful, perfect love. Holding me up with its steadfastness (Psalm 94:18).

Because my God is steadfast, and His love is everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3). His love is the one which will never fail (1 Corinthians 13:8). Not for a moment will it waver or weaken, because our God is perfect love itself, and He never changes (1 John 4:16, Psalm 102:25-27).

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father…
that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
