You Hold My Lot – Psalm 16:5

“The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.”

Psalm 16:5

The Lord holds our lot. The Lord of heaven and earth. The Lord our righteousness. Our Savior God and King. He who has made us His own and from whose love we can never be separated.

He holds our lot. Everything that our life contains and will contain, every step of our life’s path, is kept in the hands of our Mighty God.

Our life may seem filled with consequences of sin, whether committed by us or by others. A traumatic event may have shifted everything drastically. We may face confusion or sickness or pain. But what Satan intends for evil – the circumstances that threaten to destroy us and our faith – our God will use for good (Genesis 50:20).

Because He is good. He is good and He does good (Psalm 119:68). In Deuteronomy 32:4, Moses declares, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” The term chosen in that passage, “The Rock,” called to mind Isaiah 33:5-6: “The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.”

The Lord is our Rock. He is our stability in all that we face. Because He is ultimately in control of it all, and He will not fail us. There will be moments, possibly even whole seasons of your life when you can’t understand what He’s doing and your heart balks at the thought that a loving God could allow this. Look to the cross. Fix your eyes on the Savior. Study the life of Christ, the compassion and love evident in all that He said and did. He is the same today as He was 2,000 years ago, and He will be the same for all of eternity. He will not fail you. He will not leave you. He will not let anything take you from His loving, mighty, protective hand.

As you face the unknown road ahead of you, allow the peace of Christ to fill your heart and bring His strength and joy into your days. The Lord knows the plans He has for you. Plans for good, and not for evil. Plans to prosper, and not to harm. Plans to give you hope and a future.

“The beloved of the LORD dwells in safety.
The High God surrounds him all day long,
and dwells between his shoulders.”

Deuteronomy 33:12

“Your bars shall be iron and bronze,
and as your days, so shall your strength be.
There is none like God, O Jeshurun,
who rides through the heavens to your help,
through the skies in his majesty.
The eternal God is your dwelling place,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.”

Deuteronomy 33:25-27a
