“For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!”
“Those who look to him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed…
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!…
Those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.”
“But I trust in you, O LORD;
I say, ‘You are my God.’
My times are in your hand…
Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
in the sight of the children of mankind!”
“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living!
Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD!”
This morning I needed to take time to process some fears my heart has been having. Dwelling on these verses was the first step in that. Stirring my heart to hear truth and believe it.
So after reflecting on these verses, I then wrote out my fears. I won’t go into the details, but it came down to a fear that whatever my portion is, whatever God brings me, it will be less. Less than what my heart is hoping for. Less than what it could be.
And a question came to mind from a Bible study my church group just finished. Spoken to my heart as a personal, compassionate response from this God who is mine:
“Who told you that? Because it wasn’t Me.”
The one who stirred my fear, who told me that I would end up with something less, that good would be withheld from me – it wasn’t my God. It wasn’t the Sovereign Lord of the universe who holds all things in His hands, who has written my days with His steadfast love and faithfulness, and who has abundant goodness ready to pour out in perfect timing.
That is my God. My God who is good and powerful and who loves me so much He walked through fire for me, and He hears my cries and He draws near to me in struggle and pain and He speaks directly to my heart. Because the Father Himself loves me (John 16:27)! And how much more? How much more will this good Father, this God who is light and in whom is absolutely no darkness, give good things to those who are His?
How much more?
Exceeding abundantly beyond all that we could ask or imagine! (Ephesians 3:20)
Maybe it’s what I see in front of me that looks good. And if so, God will bring it together. Flawlessly.
Or maybe it’s something that’s even better.
Regardless, I do not need to fear my future.
My times are in His hands. The hands of my God who will give me so much more, withholding no good thing, and I will be radiant and never ashamed. Because this is the LORD my God who acts for those who wait for Him, and no eye has seen nor ear heard of a God like Him, a God besides Him, nor can the heart of man imagine what He has in store (Isaiah 64:4; 1 Corinthians 2:9). Because His dreams, His plans for each of us who are His, are so much better.
May our God send out His light and truth to lead us this morning. Because He is sowing light and joy into our paths, to spring up at the perfect time. There is abundant goodness ahead, and there are evidences of His abundant goodness around us if we will open our eyes and expand our perspectives to see it. “May the Lord direct [our] hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ” (2 Thessalonians 3:5). “For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in Your faithfulness” (Psalm 26:3).
