“But the LORD sits enthroned forever;
he has established his throne for justice…
The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.”
Psalm 9:7, 9-10
This morning found me deeply struggling with surrender. With faith. With really believing God is in control and will not fail…because my heart felt like He was letting me down.
I prayed that He would show me what I needed to see, to hear, to read, because I didn’t know what I even needed to restore my faith in Him here. And as I opened the study my small group is going through, an element in one of the verses began to resonate. Two simple words: the LORD.
It is the LORD. The LORD is the one working inside me. The LORD is ordaining my life. The LORD has written its details – my details.
I asked myself: Do I think Him too small, or simply too uncaring? Because I could tell it was one or the other that was hindering my submission. Perhaps both.
It is the LORD. The LORD who created all things (Genesis 1). The LORD who upholds the universe by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). The LORD who turns the king’s heart as a stream of water in His hands (Proverbs 21:1). The LORD, over mighty waters (Psalm 29:3).
The LORD who rides through the heavens to my help, through the skies in His majesty (Deuteronomy 33:26). The LORD who delights in those who fear Him, who hope in His steadfast love (Psalm 147:11). The LORD whose eyes run to and fro in all the earth to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward Him – who believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him (2 Chronicles 16:9; Hebrews 11:6). The LORD who acts for those who wait for Him (Isaiah 64:4). The LORD who watches over His Word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12). The LORD who wrote salvation for me. The LORD who endured agony for me. The LORD who conquered death for me. The LORD who called me to Himself (Acts 2:39). The LORD who is love (1 John 4:16).
“Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name,
by the greatness of his might,
and because he is strong in power
not one is missing.”
“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand…
You will seek those who contend with you,
but you shall not find them;
those who war against you
shall be as nothing at all.
For I, the LORD your God,
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.’”
Isaiah 41:10, 12-13
“But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.’”
This is the LORD. The LORD who is my shepherd (Psalm 23:1). The LORD who is greater than all and none can snatch me from His hand or thwart His purposes (John 10:29; Isaiah 46:10). The LORD who sees me and whose love, in Christ, I can never be separated from (Genesis 16:13; Romans 8:38-39). This is the LORD, and He is for me.
