“I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,
because you have seen my affliction;
you have known the distress of my soul,
and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy;
you have set my feet in a broad place.”
“For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he cried to him…
The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the LORD!”
Psalm 22:24, 26a
Even in the midst of great trial and difficulty, hope is found in Christ. Because it is Christ who connects us with the God of all comfort, the God who sees us—who sees all that we are going through and knows how it affects us in the deepest part of our soul.
It is a remarkable reality, that when we walk through affliction and hold fast to our God, when we fix our eyes on Him and lean on His Word for truth and strength, we come out on the other side with hope that is not broken, but is steadfast. We have experienced for ourselves how faithful our God is to daily bear us up, and how steadfast His love is which upholds us.
Our God proves Himself faithful. So when we are walking through darkness and pain, we look to the words from generations before which remind us that He is here, He understands, and He will not abandon us. Our God will not break a bruised reed or quench a faintly burning wick (Isaiah 42:3). He knows our frame and will not allow the enemy to destroy us. We may be broken, but never beyond the perfect healing of our Lord, that which is filled with His purpose and goodness and glory.
Our God sets our feet in a broad place. A place of safety, surrounded by His steadfast love. A place of strength, standing on the truth of His Word and walking in the strength that He provides. A place of peace, filled with the presence of God and the assurance that He knows all things and is sovereign.
We look always to our God, believing that He is on our side and acting on our behalf. His goodness is not lost to us.
“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living!”
“Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
in the sight of the children of mankind!”
Take heart, believer. In the middle of your trouble, hope is still here. Our God acts for those who wait for Him. So wait with hope, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf.
