“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose trust is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
for its leave remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
As I sat down with God this morning, I asked Him to give us a word for this year. Something to start us off, to give us focus as we begin this new journey.
In my reading, I came across this passage. My prayer for you, throughout 2016, is that you will be one who trusts in the Lord. That you will send out your roots by the stream of Living Water – the fountain that springs up to eternal life – and find your satisfaction in Christ, being filled to overflowing with Him. Knowing that our roots are planted in the stream of the Living God, whose waters do not fail, who gives strength to the weary and light to those in darkness, we can confidently face the future that is unknown to us. Because that future, each day, is known to our God who sustains us with grace and power.
It is why the woman of Proverbs 31 is described in verse 15 as one who “laughs at the time to come.” Her trust is placed in the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, who knows and keeps those who are His. She knows that whatever may come, if she will trust in the Lord, her leaves will remain green – for He will not fail to keep pouring into her His life, His strength, and His joy.
“The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and his ears toward their cry” (Psalm 34:15). As you seek to trust in the Lord, remember that His eyes see you and His ears hear when you cry to Him. I don’t want us to come away with a general thought of “God knows what He’s doing.” Rather, I want our hearts to be encouraged and strengthened knowing that our God knows us. He knows you. He knows what you’re going through. He knows how you’re struggling. He knows everything which may scare or intimidate you. He knows it all, and He cares about you as your Father.
So you can trust Him without fear. Because He loves you. He hears you. He’s paying attention to you. And He has promised that He will never leave or forsake or forget you. You are surrounded by His love and grace and power and purpose, as the mountains surround Jerusalem – and this Mountain will not fail. He will keep pouring into you, and He will keep fighting for you. Keep trusting. Keep determining to banish fear or worry from your thoughts. Your leaves will remain green. You will not cease to bear fruit. For God is with you.
“Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love.”
